Buying Local: Seed Edition

It’s Finally Here! A comprehensive list of Utah based seed companies!

We stopped by Home Depot yesterday and I felt my heart beat start to increase as I spotted the glorious stand of seeds near the indoor potted plants. It's almost time. Spring is almost here.

I skipped the Home Depot seeds because I've had much better luck with local seeds that really thrive in our area and I love to support other local businesses. So, when I got home I placed some orders to my favorite Utah based seed companies to make sure I had everything ready to start my seeds in just a few weeks time. Here are some of my favorite local seed companies:

DT Seeds: Amazing Tomatoes

Delectation of Tomatoes, etc. was established in 2011 and is located in East Carbon, Utah. The proprietor, Dale, has over 3,000 varieties of tomato seeds, offers a great variety of other vegetables and even has seedlings if you want to skip some steps. His website has a very user friendly store. His prices are also amazing - typically less than $3 for a seed carton. Buying from DT Seeds, you get to support a local proprietor, get to choose from a huge variety of plants that can't be found in the stores and the seeds typically do very well. I highly encourage you to check DT Seeds out!

True Leaf Market: A lot of everything

True Leaf Market is located in Salt Lake City and has been around since 1974. They carry several brands, including my favorite, Mountain Valley. They have just about any seed you could think up and the prices are comparable to what is found in the chain stores likes Lowes or Home Depot. I especially love their herb section - there are so many options! They have a will call option so you do not need to pay shipping if you are local to Salt Lake. This is a great, local alternative that provides a quality product.

Anderson's Seed and Garden: Store Front Option

Anderson's is local to Logan, Utah and offers a store front - so shipping isn't required (but, they do have that option) and you can go and wander and make all those splurge purchases that your heart desires. Anderson's offers bulk seeds by the pound and again, very reasonable prices - typically under $2 for two grams of seeds - which is a great deal. Anderson's also has a very knowledgeable staff that is willing to take phone calls or messages on their website with your gardening questions and problems.

Great Basin Seed: Pasture and grasses, oh my!

Great Basin Seed is located out of Ephraim, Utah. They are a family owned company where you can find all the pasture and grass mixes that your hearts desire. They also offer a great wildflower mix. We love the customer service at Great Basin Seed and have planted their pasture and cover crops for our sheep and chickens to graze. They frequently have pasture mixes on sale and offer a great variety of dry lot mixes which is perfect for Utah!

There are several other local seed companies not listed here that I do plan to explore in the coming years, but these four are great places to start if you are looking for local options for your garden this spring and summer!
